If you’ve never gone camping before, it can be difficult to pick out the right clothes to bring with you. When you’re sleeping outside under the stars, you feel every type of weather and temperature—the days can be hot, the nights cool, the mornings damp, and the afternoons sunny and dry.

Whatever your forecast looks like, you don’t want to pack too much. When packing for a camping trip, you should pack light. Solving the mystery of what clothes to pack for a camping trip will help you stay warm and dry while you brave the wilderness.

Layers, Layers, Layers

With your empty pack in front of you, consider your basic three layers first: a base layer, an insulating layer, and an outer shell layer. While these three may seem different during the summer, the same basic principles apply.

Your base layer should be breathable and keep moisture off your body—even in the dead heat of summer, moisture from sweat can chill you and cause hypothermia. A second layer is useful for keeping the bugs off and perfect for keeping you warm around the campfire. Your third outer shell layer can protect you while you do hard work around the campsite, whether you’re chopping up wood or searching for a good fishing hole.

Keep Your PJs Separate

Whenever you go to sleep, you must be completely dry. Sleeping in damp or sweaty clothes not only feels gross but can also put you at risk for hypothermia. Your body slows down when you’re sleeping—if it gets colder than 95 degrees Fahrenheit due to damp clothing, there’s a chance you could get sick.

Protect the warm clothes you’ll wear to bed with a waterproof bag and take the opportunity at night to change your undergarments as well. They stay closest to your body, so if they’re sweaty, they’ll impact your body temperature. If you wear the same clothes the next day, be sure to air them out to keep them dry, so you aren’t uncomfortable the next morning.

No matter what the weather looks like for your upcoming camping trip, Escape Outdoors has the outdoor lifestyle options you need to figure out what clothes to pack for a camping trip. From a light, breezy base layer to a cozy Patagonia Better Sweater fleece shirt jacket, our selection of seasonal clothing will keep you comfortable as you hike, explore, and relax on your next vacation with Mother Nature.
